Loosely based on concepts from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, there are guest appearances from King Arthur and all of his Knights, coconuts, a shrubbery, an unladen swallow, a trojan rabbit, a catapult, an airborne cow, the Holy Hand Grenade, and the Finger of God, as well as such Python classics as the giant foot, the nude organist, a resting parrot, and the Spanish Inquisition - which, of course everyone was expecting.

Okay, this is Annie Leonard. She spent ten years researching what happens to garbage; how we create it, how we consume it, how we dispose of it. She made this video called “The Story of Stuff” and it is a brilliant explanation.

In the film she quotes Victor Lebou, articulating what has become the norm for the whole system:

“Our enormously productive economy … demands that we make consumption our way of life, that we convert the buying and use of goods into rituals, that we seek our spiritual satisfaction, our ego satisfaction, in consumption…we need things consumed, burned up, replaced and discarded at an ever accelerating rate.”

Also quoted, President Eisenhauer’s Economic Advisors Chairman:

“The American economy’s ultimate purpose is to produce more consumer goods.”

More consumer goods? Our ultimate purpose? Not provide health care, education, or safe transportation, or sustainability, or justice? Consumer goods?

You need to go watch it. Maybe it will infuriate you enough to do something about it. Like, post it on your blog, which is so effective. Excuse me while I go curl up in a corner.

One of my favorite educational pieces of all time. Phenomenal work. I showed this to my son when we first started homeschooling. Thanks for reminding me about it.

Santa accused of being health and safety bad influence

Well, he could be, if some health and safety campaigners have their way. A team of health experts have accused Santa of promoting obesity and drink-driving.

They say a fat, tipsy Father Christmas with no regard for health and safety sends out the wrong message to children and they want to give him a makeover.

‘We propose a new image for Santa to ensure that his influence on public health is a positive one,’ said researcher Dr Nathan Grills of Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

He said the tradition of leaving a glass of sherry out for Santa could be seen to promote drink-driving.

‘With a few billion houses to visit Santa would soon be over the limit,’ he added.

Other dangerous activities he could be accused of promoting include speeding, disregard for the Highway Code and extreme sports such as roof surfing and chimney jumping. Despite the risks of high-speed air travel Santa is ‘never seen wearing a seat belt or a helmet’.

Dr Grills wants Santa to hop off his speedy sleigh and jog his way around the world, he writes in the British Medical Journal.

He also thinks the usual mince pie left out for him should be replaced with healthy celery or carrot sticks.
